Hickory Grove Park in Story County has a 3-mile gravel trail that loops around the lake, a swimming beach, playgrounds and a campground. There are modern restrooms attached to the beach concession stand and two portable restrooms along the trail. There's also several shelters with picnic tables along the trail. The lake was drawn down in 2018 and still needs to refill naturally with rainfall.
June 2022 - the lake is full and canoe and pedal boats are available for $5/half hour. Concession stand is open Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Water Quality - The lake's been closed since 8/5/22 due to poor water quality. The water is tested every Tuesday in June, July and August and results are posted on Fridays. You can see the latest numbers on the Iowa DNR Beach Monitoring site. There's an informative Story County Conservation video if you want to learn more their beach monitoring program.
