Tulips in 2023 - Pella, Iowa

We love visiting Pella on a weekday in late April or early May to avoid the Tulip Time crowds.  We started at Brinkhoff Park for a quick stop at the welcome sign, then drove to the Square where there was plenty of parking available.  We walked all around Central Park and Molengracht Plaza, stopping for bakery treats at Vander Ploeg Bakery.

Several people have tried to convince me that Jaarsma Bakery is better, but after trying both several times, I think they're both really good.  I prefer Vander Ploeg with kids because their selection is smaller which makes it easier for them to decide what they want.

Next, we headed to the Wonder Spelen playground at Kiwanis Park.  The playground has some really cute Dutch features and is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded.  From there, we walked to Sunken Gardens Park where we saw many families having picnic dinners.  For our dinner, we headed back to Molengracht Plaza and ate at Dutch Fix.

The food was really good at Dutch Fix, but I highly recommend ordering online.  The line was very long when we arrived and the take-out orders were being served first.  I was thankful we had ordered before leaving the Sunken Gardens because the same people were still standing in line waiting to order when we had finished dinner.

The Pella Community Services Facebook page posts helpful updates to let you know the tulip bloom status.  Bloom time is dependent on weather, but is generally mid April to early May.  After Tulip Time, the tulips are replaced with more than 32,000 annual flowers and plants that provide color into late summer.
